Autumn weather brings about more hazardous driving conditions, with colder weather conditions and sun dazzle causing issues for drivers.

Now is the time to make sure your car is performing as it should be, and we have compiled a list of checks that can aid your safety: 

1. Tyre Conditions: Use your vehicle handbook to check the correct pressure for your tyres, and make sure to get them checked. Driving on tyres which are under-inflated will damage the tyres themselves – leading to uneven wear and potentially even an accident. Tyre Tread is also an issue as we edge toward the winter months – if your tyres are old they may not be able to grip to the road as safely in wetter conditions. Ideal Tyre Tread is around 3mm according to the AA. 
   
2. Battery Power: If you have had any problems with your battery in the summer months it is highly recommended you check its performance, as colder conditions put extra pressure on your engine. If your lights dim, or your engine has failed to start it may be time to get a new one, or at least recharge your current battery. It is recommended that if your battery is over 3 years old you should have it replaced. Fear not, this is not an expensive job and original equipment matching quality batteries are on average around £100.
   
3. Windscreen Maintenance: The later months of the year mean sun dazzle at peak commuting times which can affect your safety as well as safety of others on the road if your vision is impaired. Make sure to keep sunglasses in the car for a quick fix. The best solution is to keep windscreen washer fluid topped up, as the chemicals help clean away any smears or watermarks more effectively. Also, your windscreen wipers only last on average 2 years – new blades can clean your windscreen far more effectively leaving your screen clearer to reduce dazzle. 
   
4. Fluid Levels: We have already mentioned your windscreen washer fluid level being an important check to make, but whilst you’re taking a look at the engine make sure to check your oil and antifreeze levels and top up where necessary.
