5 warning lights and what they mean

With so many different dashboard lights it’s important to know which need immediate attention. Below are 5 warning lights and what they mean.

1. Oil pressure

The oil pressure light should illuminate as soon as the ignition is switched on and turn off once the engine starts. If it remains on after the engine has started then turn off the engine and check the oil level using the dip stick.

2. Battery charge

Like the oil pressure light the battery charge light should illuminate as soon as the ignition is switched on and turn off once the engine starts. If it illuminates while driving or not at all then it means that there is a fault with the charging system.

3. Brake system

This is a light that will need attention. It should remain illuminated when the handbrake is on. If its still lit after the handbrake is released it may indicate low brake fluid level.

4. Engine warning

If the engine warning light is on when the engine is running it means there might be a problem with the management system. This should be checked as soon as possible.

5. ABS (anti-lock brakes)

Most cars have ABS brakes. If this light remains on after the engine has started then there is a fault. This means the ABS system will not function and should be corrected as soon as possible so as not to affect normal braking.
