It’s important to make sure that you have the right amount of fluid in your car. In order for it to run smoothly certain fluids need to be checked regularly and topped up every so often. Below are 5 engine fluids that need to be checked.

1. Transmission

The transmission fluid keeps the gears moving smoothly. This is one check where you need to keep the car running. Its checked in the same way as you would the engine oil, with a dipstick. Changing is normally done every 50,000 to 100,000 miles but confirm with a trained mechanic first.

2. Coolant

The coolant will stop your car from overheating. This fluid is found inside the radiator so extra care needs to be taken when removing the cap. Always check once the engine has cooled down, never when it’s hot or running. You’ll be able to see if fluid level needs topping up. Remember to make sure its the same as in the car already.

3. Brake fluid

This is one fluid which should never get low. Normally it needs to be checked when you change the oil, so not too often. If you notice the performance of your brakes weakening look at the reservoir on the driver side of your car through the container. Brake fluid should be changed every two years.

4. Power steering

Modern cars will have power steering so in order to work effectively there needs to be the right amount of fluid in the reservoir. If there isn’t you’ll get a shuddering in the steering wheel or it may seize altogether. Visually check the reservoir at least once a month.

5. Engine oil

Last but not least is the engine oil which is a very straight forward check to make. Use the dipstick to check the level in the engine. If it’s below the recommended limit indicated on the dipstick it will need topping up. Ideally you should change the oil at least once but check with your local mechanic.
